Hello everyone! Welcome to my part 2 of my BookExpo/BookCon 2018 recap. The BookCon website says there are other authors to be signed. I made a last minute decision to buy a ticket to BookCon and I'm so glad I did! I haven't gone to BEA (Book Expo America) in the last couple years but thanks to my blog and the lovely publishers I've gotten to know, I still get to feel a part of it through invites to blogger events and dear friends who pick up books for me. Mapping Out Strong Character Arcs. Seafire is one of my most anticipated reads of the summer, and I definitely wanted to try to get an ARC. Bookcon is a totally different show. We came away from the weekend with dozens of books, but here are five we’re particularly excited about – and Let me tell you, neither of us was disappointed. I nearly fell over in the street when I ran into Brendan Kiely, I had minor fangirl palpitations when I realized that Victoria Schwab was mere feet away, and… We found out early that morning via the amazing Bookcon app that ARCs for Zenith were dropping at the Harlequin Teen booth as soon as Day 2 of Bookcon started, so when the show floor was open, my mom and I rushed to the Harlequin Teen booth. This year I had the amazing opportunity to work at BookExpo and BookCon in New York City! In case you didn't know, these are some of the biggest book-related events in North America, with hundreds of authors, publishers, and other guests attending to meet fans and promote upcoming releases. BookCon was definitely more intense, but that was because it was a free-for-all for fans. The only downfall is that is gets a bit flooded during the day and hard to keep up with.
Whereas Book Expo America is dedicated to those of the trade, BookCon is primarily for consumers. Decide what you want to do, get there early and get in line. I got tickets to see Kendare Blake and Renee Ahdieh. BookExpo is a publishing industry convention, meaning to be able to attend, you have to prove that you are part of the book community as a professional in publishing as a publisher, editor, publicist, author, reviewer, etc, etc. BookCon itself is held on June 1 and June 2 at the Javits Center in New York City. And I get it – the publishers and authors are tired of seeing people coming in, getting these ARCs, and then reselling them on ebay or something. (covers link to goodreads). The buzz surrounding the conference, it’s events, signings, and temptingly teetering towers of advanced readers copies (ARCs) and book drops, made BookCon seem like the obvious conclusion to a lifelong reading passion. Yes, getting free stuff and meeting your fave author is amazing. This past weekend, I was frustratingly lucky enough to attend my second year at BookCon. This was my third year in a row of not attending Book Expo but last minute I was gifted a ticket to BookCon so I got to attend that! But even without going to the actual conference, I still had plenty of bookish things to do between publisher happy hours, breakfasts and best of all, seeing friends! BookCon Official Group has 1,955 members.
Also, I posted my Bookcon haul last year & that was all fine and well because I was new in the blogosphere & was very excited to share my 1st bookish event. Started in 2014, BookCon is run by the same company that runs Comic-Con - ReedPOP - and follows on the heels of BookExpo, the largest and longest running annual book trade fair in America. The in-booth signings were more than we expected, with long lineups of fans waiting to get their hands on the ARC of the book. We didn't know what to expect since it was the first BookCon ever so we thought that it would be a good idea to share our experiences and some tips that we have! BookCon is, as described by ReedPOP, "where storytelling and pop culture collide". After that, we jump in a line that was giving away an arc, and kept line jumping for more arcs. A few of my coworkers are going to that one. Books: I didn’t get a lot of books at BookCon but I got a few. I had the chance to meet some of the amazing people in the BookTube and There was an ARC signing that I wanted to go to at 10:30 a. However, there are tons of other events for you take advantage of, likes bookish games, panels, and photo booths. Lines were organized, publishers were so nice and lines for authors and arc drops were not that bad. For BookCon, IPG tore down their branding to put up an immense wall of blackout poetry and for two days, there were people creating their own poetry using prose from [Dis]Connected and black washi tape. Let’s get started with the arcs! BOOKCON This was the first year that I attended BookCon since its inception so I had no idea what to expect!! The first year was kind of a hot mess and they seemed to have it down to a science now this year. As first timers, we learned a lot. Hope to see Nic Stone at either Bookcon or National Book Fest in 2018!! But I did get one arc I was really hoping to get! The in-booth signings were more than we expected, with long lineups of fans waiting to get their hands on the ARC of the book. ** The Truth About BEA & BookCon I just got back from this year’s BEA event in NYC, and I want to summarize a few things for those of you who wonder what happens there, or what this BookCon thing is, or what’s going to happen to BEA in the future…which is a big question, for sure. All in all, BookCon sounds quite different from BEA’s Power Reader Day, and the fact that they randomly announced the change weeks after I bought my ticket (months after others bought their tickets) feels a bit, well, wrong. But the book side was awesome. The Twitter tags #arcsfortrade and #booksfortrade will be filled with other people trying to trade ARCs and there’s always a lot of good choices after BEA/Bookcon are over. People who followed the rule and came back when they were told to were left without an arc and were not able to meet their favorite author. We would love to meet you and talk books!
